COVID 19 AND MENTAL HEALTH

SESSION PDF

INTRODUCTION

Why have we created an additional session?

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed our lives. Lockdown and quarantine orders are commonplace now, and people everywhere are adjusting to work-from-home requirements, travel restrictions, the closure of schools and nonessential businesses, and the realities of physical distancing. These changes don’t just affect us physically; they affect us mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Indeed, research demonstrates that widespread disease and economic recession lead to increased rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges.

This additional course session was created to address the unique need for mental health awareness and education in this season. The ways that we understand and process our experiences of COVID-19 will have long-term implications for our recovery and mental health.

When should the additional session be completed?

This session may be completed before you begin the first session of The Sanctuary Course, or after you finish the last session of The Sanctuary Course

What does the additional session cover?

This session introduces the goals and format of the course, examines emotional and social vulnerabilities in light of the pandemic, highlights resources to support mental health, and reflects on the gift of lament.

Note: This session does not include a film. This course addresses difficult and sensitive topics, and may not be appropriate for a young audience. It is not recommended for people age 17 and younger.

EMOTIONAL WHEEL

We’ve created a printable version of the Emotions Wheel from this session, as well as a simple Feelings Wheel for children. Download them here.
